The Flash’s final season is plagued by a serious issue, and time is running out.

The Flash season 9 has officially passed the halfway mark with the end of “Wildest Dreams,” but I’m a little disappointed. I once thought that The CW was lucky to have greenlit the series starring Grant Gustin for another season, even though the original idea was for the show to have its finale at the end of season 8. What could go wrong with additional episodes and the opportunity to improve the finale? I’ve found the answer to that question in surprising ways so far in this final season, and it even leads me to the point that maybe The Flash wanted this final season to be. Here are some of the criticisms that have taken the most to heart after this final episode .

Filler, Filler, And More Filler

The Universe

When the final season of The Flash premiered, I expected all 13 of those episodes to build towards an epic conclusion. Instead, the show was confusing, jumping from a seemingly rushed Red Death arc to a weird standalone episode that didn’t feel relevant to the larger story at all. You could even say that this final episode was more focused on advancing Supergirl’s Dreamer storyline than anything else, which is weird. Why resolve a character’s arc from a canceled show in the final season of this series? Why not build towards a grand finale? I ask myself these questions over and over again.

We Get Cameos, But None Of The Ones I Want

The Flash has gotten into the habit of bringing back stars from previous seasons over the past few years, but none of the stars I really wanted to see have made an appearance. Don’t get me wrong, I loved seeing Goldface, The Hotness, and Pied Piper again, but I wouldn’t really put them on my top 20 list of people I want to see come back in the final season. I would also like to see Cisco Ramon, Amunet Black, or Wells the Gray. They haven’t appeared so far this season, and while they may stick around until the final episode, I think they should at least have some presence this season. Of course, none of them will be in for a full season, but the series has brought back many previous stars who disappeared in the past. I think it would have been better to use this element within the season to give more emphasis to the legacy characters.

It’s Not Even Fun To Watch

I could forgive The Flash‘s filler episodes in the final season if I was having a blast watching them, but I’m not. This isn’t like last season with the whacky time-traveling adventures of the West-Allen kids, which is more along the lines of what I was hoping for. This is more like “Iris is about to die, and Barry has to save her” for the umpteenth time, and I’ve seen that play out too many times before. I’m really hoping things turn around toward the end, but am fully prepared to be let down as well. The Flash Season 9 airs on The CW on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET. Tune in to watch the final episodes of the series, and check out some of the other shows arriving via our 2023 TV schedule in the coming weeks.
