The Creepy True Story That Inspired The Movie

The plot of 1408 may seem unrealistic, but it is actually based on a true story. 1408, directed by Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hofström, was released in his 2007 year and is still considered one of his best horror films based on the original work by Stephen King. In the film, John Cusack plays Mike Enslin, a paranormal skeptic who writes a book debunking the paranormal. His latest investigation leads him to a luxurious hotel in New York called The Dolphin, home to his infamous haunted room known as 1408. Despite hotel manager Gerald Olin’s (Samuel L. Jackson) warnings, Jackson), Mike insists on staying in 1408, but his skepticism is soon tested in a horrifying way. The Stephen King movie is based on the short story of the same name by macabre master Stephen King. This story first appeared in his self-narrated audiobook, Blood And Smoke, and later appeared in his short story collection, Everything’s Endual. In the film, Mike records his thoughts about room 1408 and says, “Hotel rooms are inherently scary places, don’t you think? I mean, how many people have slept in that bed?” ” In front of you? How many of them are sick? How many of them have lost their minds? This line is taken almost verbatim from King’s 1408 preface to Everything’s Even, but the inherently spooky nature of the hotel room was not the only inspiration for the story.
