It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on in the trailer for The Sympathizer, but that seems to be the point of The Sympathizer (out April 14). In a new article in Vanity Fair, The Sympathizer showrunners Park and Don McKellar praised Downey’s work as both an actor and producer. “He used his star power to free me,” McKellar said, noting that Downey himself had “crazy ideas” for the film. “He gave us the freedom to do that.” Director Park, who directed three of the seven episodes, told VF, “I was amazed at how quickly he was able to deliver completely different performances, different improvisations for each shot.” “Even when I had a good enough recording, I had to step back and not ask for more.” It was incredible to see that. The Marvel alum helped Xuande settle into his own challenging, shapeshifting role: “He said words to the effect of, ‘Brother, we’re going to screw this project up together—don’t you worry,’” the star recalled of his first meeting with Downey. “It can be really intimidating when you work with someone like him and you know that he’s going to run circles around you, but he lent this comforting hand on my shoulder and just said, ‘We’re in this together.’
