Robert Downey Jr. Names The “Best Film I’ve Ever Been In”

Robert Downey Jr. chose Oppenheimer as his best film. Amidst the Hollywood revival, Downey Jr. landed his biggest role to date when he was cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. After more than a decade and 10 films, he retired from Marvel and is now embarking on a post-MCU career. Downey Jr. is currently playing Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which has been named the best film Downey Jr. has ever starred in. He made the bold statement on the red carpet at the film’s UK premiere (via Deadline). Read his full quote below: “I’ll be completely honest with you, this is the best movie I’ve ever been in and I can’t wait for you all to experience it. But after the red carpet at the Oppenheimer, the whole thing ended.”The cast attended the premiere in support of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which is calling for a way to fairly and properly pay actors. The performance continued, and Nolan explained why Downey Jr. and the rest of the orchestra didn’t come onstage with them.

Why Oppenheimer Is Critical For RDJ’s Post-MCU Career

Downey Jr. has barely appeared in any films outside of the franchise in the decade since he joined the MCU. He’s appeared in a Sherlock Holmes film and made a guest appearance in Favreau’s Boss, but he’s spent most of his time playing Iron Man. This not only contributes to Stark having one of the best personal storylines in the MCU, but also contributes to the stereotype of Downey Jr.’s role, which Nolan seems to have wanted to counter Oppenheimer.

It’s been more than four years since Downey Jr. finished his run in the MCU. After getting out of the Marvel bubble, he was involved in several other projects. But Oppenheimer is undoubtedly the most important project of his career after the MCU. It could show whether he can excel as Iron Man even without the armor. There’s no doubting Downey Jr.’s talent, but the actor himself has admitted that he fears that joining the MCU would mean playing the same role over and over again, ruining his acting skills. Downey Jr. has many great projects coming up outside of the MCU. Long before he was cast as Iron Man, he was first nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin, and again for Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder. It remains to be seen whether Oppenheimer will nominate Downey Jr. again, but he already considers this a major achievement in his long and varied career.
