Reviewing ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3: A Television Critique

“Slow Horses” season 3 arrives on Apple TV+ on November 29 (2 episodes). “Slow Horses” makes a triumphant return to the big screen with a winning mix of character work, unforgettable dialogue and gripping action. Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb may still be the star, but there’s not a weak link in this cast, and several new additions (including one who only appears in the first episode) only reinforce that feeling.

What works about ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3?

Season 3 of Slow Horses starring Kristin Scott Thomas will premiere on Apple TV+ on November 29, 2023. Apple TV+ is clearly pleased with the success of this adaptation of Mick Herron’s popular spy thriller, as the streaming service is splitting it into two seasons, which is why we got a glimpse of the second movie during the credits of the first one. This will continue into season 4, which has already been filmed, which is a very good thing considering the quality of season 3. Even in this era of top-tier television and short streaming seasons, there are shows that lose steam after just a few seasons. Luckily, “Slow Horses” is definitely not one of them. Showrunner Will Smith (not that guy) and his team have kept the entertainment value consistent throughout the seasons so far, and the third season is no exception. For those of you who have never seen the series, this is a completely different world than the usual exploits of, say, James Bond or Jason Bourne. The film is set in a more realistic, and seedier, world of MI5 outcasts who have failed in their jobs and are banished to the secret service.

Slow Horses Season 3, starring Gary Oldman, will premiere on Apple TV+ on November 29, 2023. Slough House (the origin of the team’s nickname) is the end of the intelligence world, a place where careers end if you don’t succeed in the glittering glass and hard concrete of the intelligence agency’s headquarters in Regent’s Park. And yet As led by the drunken, flatulent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), they somehow always manage to make it work. When big crises threaten the UK, the team is often drafted in, usually without really wanting to take part. Oldman is very clearly having the time of his life playing Lamb, all stained shirts and stringy hair whose outward appearance and brusque manner (a choice line of his from this season is, “you’re about as welcome as a turd in a hot tub”) hides a keen intelligence and a strong feeling of loyalty to those who earn it. While he insults his team constantly, he’d lay down his life to help any one of them in truly dire straits.

What doesn’t work in ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3?

There are no major problems with the new season of “Slow Horses.” But some may complain that each new plot contains a variation of the tropes of the spy genre: a threat to the state, a conspiracy to protect a long-hidden secret, a team member being kidnapped to gain an advantage. But every time, the writers subvert these tropes with the show’s humor and style.

‘Slow Horses’ Season 3: Final Thoughts

“Slow Horses” season 3, starring Jack Lowden, will premiere on Apple TV+ on November 29, 2023. In a world where spies are usually skilled spies who save the day using complicated devices or seducing the right woman, “Slow Horses” is a subtly vulgar portrayal of espionage. But it’s heartening to know we’re being offered an alternative that offers a very human perspective. Long may these horses ride (even if they’re slow).

What’s the story of ‘Slow Horses’ Season 3?

In season three of Slow Horses, a love affair in Istanbul threatens to expose hidden MI5 secrets in London. When Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and his team of misfits get caught up in the fray, they become embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens not only the future of Slough House, but MI5 itself.
