Noem looking to bolster Texas security efforts at US-Mexico border

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Wednesday that her administration is considering increasing support for Texas’ efforts to deter migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, including deploying razor wire and security guards. Ta. The two-term Republican governor criticized the situation at the border in a speech to a joint session of Congress convened on Monday after a trip to the border last week. Noem, once considered a potential 2024 presidential candidate, has made the border situation a top priority during her tenure. “The United States of America is in an age of invasion,” Noem said. “Invasion is coming through our southern border. The 50 states have a common enemy, and that enemy is the Mexican drug cartels. They are waging war on our country, and these cartels continues to cause violence in all of our states and here in South Dakota.”

Border security has been a focus in many states and Congress, with Republicans calling for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for making aid to Ukraine conditional on border security agreements. Even President Joe Biden has said he would close the border as part of the deal if granted emergency powers. Noem cited illicit drugs such as fentanyl, and violent crimes in communities and on tribal reservations. She said she would “openly” support the Oglala Sioux Tribe in a lawsuit filed last week against the federal government and would ask law enforcement for more assistance. In November, Tribal Chairman Frank Starr Coming Out declared a state of emergency on the Pine Ridge Reservation, citing increased crime. A federal judge ruled last year that the federal government has a treaty obligation to support law enforcement on reservations, but declined to rule on the amount of funding the tribes are seeking. The governor also said South Dakota is willing to send barbed wire to Texas. The administration is “considering various legal options for how to support Texas and allow the federal government to carry out its mission,” and is also considering staffing options.

“It is shameful that she is using the Mexican border for political purposes to further her own agenda and align herself with former President Trump, and she is doing it at the expense of tribes. There is,” he added. Republican House Majority Leader Will Mortenson said Noem “painted a pretty vivid picture of the situation on the border and made a compelling case, need for action at the border.” Lawmakers will look for specific proposals she might put forth during the ongoing session, he said. Noem has deployed South Dakota National Guard troops three times to the border, including last year, and she has visited several times, including on Friday. Other Republican governors have deployed troops and visited the border too.
