Marvel’s Phase 5 Continues The Weirdest MCU Trend You Probably Missed
The MCU continues to find new ways to incorporate weirdly specific trends that have been hidden in some of its films and series. The MCU is never more diverse than the Multiverse Saga, which features everything from the birth of Celestials and underwater civilizations to multiverse battles and breaking the fourth wall. Still, certain elements have appeared multiple times throughout the series, and some are harder to pinpoint than others. Notable trends in the MCU include the excessive use of nanotech suits and the low likelihood of resurrections. An even more insidious trend that has been hidden in the MCU so far is that in every Phase 2 film a character loses an arm, but that’s not as obvious as you might think, since every character who lost an arm in the Infinity Saga actually lost an arm. In different ways. Likewise, the MCU has continued to highlight certain settings over the years, and it doesn’t seem like that’s going to stop anytime soon.
Secret Invasion Continues The MCU’s Museum Obsession
Many scenes in MCU titles take place in museums. For example, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a Captain America exhibit takes place at the Smithsonian Museum, and Sam Wilson displays Captain America’s shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In Black Panther, Erik Killmonger steals Wakandan artifacts from the British Museum of Fiction. Shortly after, Peter Parker’s school trip to the Da Vinci Museum in Italy is interrupted by Mysterio’s attack, just before Spider-Man’s companions take refuge in the Emerald House in London. Coincidentally, Peter Parker was also unable to visit the Museum of Modern Art in New York due to his superhero role in Avengers: Infinity War. In Phase 4, Eternals Sersi and Dane Whitman meet at the Natural History Museum in London, where the two work together. Moon Knight’s filming locations include the Budapest Museum of Art, which is also London’s National Gallery, where Steven Grant first donned the Moon Knight mantle. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness uses the real British Museum for the Illuminati scene, as well as a reference to the Strange Museum built to commemorate Doctor Strange on Earth-838. Currently, The Secret Invasion shows a scene between Talos and Gravik at the National Portrait Gallery, with Talos stabbing Gravik in the arm.
Why The MCU Features So Many Museums
Unlike Phase 2, which pays homage to Star Wars with an arm amputation scene, there is no specific thread that ties all the museum scenes together in the MCU. Museums are simply a convenient location for intimate scenes, and action scenes tend to be more exciting in delicate locations where many valuables are kept. Museums also help shape the personalities of characters in subtle ways, as heroes such as Sersi, Black Knight, and Moon Knight prove to be cultured intellectuals even before the first battle in the MCU. Therefore, it is very likely that future MCU movies and shows will continue to incorporate museums into their storylines.
