Marvel’s Phase 5 Can Answer A Huge Kang Mystery The MCU Has Ignored So Far

Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may unravel a big mystery surrounding Kang the Conqueror that Marvel has yet to solve. Jonathan Majors made his MCU debut in season 1 of Loki on Disney+, playing the variant of Kang known as He Who Remains. The character’s death kicked off the MCU’s multiverse storyline, and Loki season 1 ripped the multiverse apart in a big way. Majors then returned to confirm the series’ hints about the MCU’s next Big Bad, and the actor appeared as Kang the Conqueror alongside Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Kang’s MCU debut showed why the villain instills fear in others, and Majors’ character is a force to be reckoned with. Kang displayed a wide range of powers throughout the films as he faced off against Ant-Man and his family, as well as the rebel forces of the Quantum Realm. He possessed excellent hand-to-hand combat skills, some techno-telekinesis to move objects and people, and the ability to fire energy beams from his hands. While Kang emerged as a formidable foe for the MCU’s heroes, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania left many questions about the character unanswered.

The MCU Hasn’t Answered How Kang’s Powers Work

The MCU

Kang showed off enough power in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to show why he became the new main antagonist of the MCU after Thanos. However, the source of Kang’s powers is never explained in the movie. While the movie doesn’t directly mention the source of his powers, it is clear that it comes from 31st century technology, not his DNA. There are several moments in the movie where Kang becomes powerless when his luxury suit breaks down. For example, when he was first stranded in the Quantum Realm, Kang had no powers because he didn’t have his suit. He also lost some of his abilities when Hank Pym’s ants damaged his suit at the end of the movie. The various variants of Kang that make up the Council of Kangs also make an appearance soon after, in a team meeting in the film’s post-credits scene, where they presumably use the multiverse technology that Kang possesses, though that remains unexplained – only Kang’s ability to use the time field to travel to any point in time is explained.

The Marvels Can Explain Kang’s Multiverse Powers

While it is clear that Kang’s powers are thanks to his technology, it has yet to be explained how his technology works, and the upcoming The Marvels may shed some light on the matter. “The Marvels” may be influenced by the bracelets seen in “Ms. Marvels,” which were introduced as a tie-in to “Avengers: Secret Wars” as they are confirmed to open space-time portals. This would explain Kang’s multiversal powers if he had access to the two bracelets. If Kang knew about the bracelets, they would be a prime target for villains, and Marvels producer Mary Livanos has specifically mentioned Avengers: Secret Wars as a project where the full powers of the two bracelets could be explored together, so it’s possible that Kang the Conqueror will get two bracelets in the film. Since this character is all about messing with time, this could lead to the revelation that Kang and the Council of Kangs gained multiversal powers through the use of the bracelets, leading to the birth of Kang the Conqueror.
