Mortal Kombat 2 Casting Continues With Addition Of Major Video Game Character

More casting news has been revealed for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2, with another protagonist from the video game series joining the growing cast. Based on the popular fighting game first developed in the early 1990s, Mortal Kombat follows Earthrealm warriors as they battle it out in tournaments to protect the world from the dark forces of the outside world. The series was first adapted into a film in 1995 as Mortal Kombat, followed by its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in 1997. In 2021, the series was rebooted under the direction of Simon McQuoid, who also directed Mortal Kombat 2.

Will Mortal Kombat 2 Return To The Source Mythology?

The 2021 theatrical debut of Mortal Kombat exceeded opening weekend box office expectations, marking a strong start for an industry hit hard by the   pandemic, as well as a strong showing for both streaming services and released films. Despite the impressive opening weekend, the film received mixed reviews, as well as complaints about changes to the game’s storyline. Among the biggest concerns was the introduction of an all-new character, Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, and the decision not to show the actual Mortal Kombat tournament.

But if the recent spate of casting announcements are any indication, Mortal Kombat 2 will likely return with a more faithful rendition of the original game’s lore. Rudolph’s Princess Kitana, who first appeared in the 1993 game Mortal Kombat II, plays a key role in Outworld’s story as the adopted daughter of villain Shao Kahn. A disfigured clone named Mileena was introduced and then killed off in 2021’s Mortal Kombat, but her appearance in the sequel alongside her loyal bodyguard Jade suggests plans for her to return in a remake that sticks closer to the original mythology.

Additionally, The Boys and Lord of the Rings star Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage, one of the original game’s original characters who was also cut from the 2021 film. With Cage on board in addition to Kitana and Jade, Mortal Kombat 2 seems determined to address many of the criticisms with its 2021 reboot. Only time will tell if the sequel can match the success of the original game, but treating the original story with the respect it deserves will go a long way to satisfying audiences.
