Harrison Ford Reacts In Bizarre Fashion As Scientists Name Third Animal After Him

Harrison Ford has responded to scientists naming another animal after him. The actor, now 81, is one of the most popular people of his generation. Ford began his acting career almost 60 years ago and is best known for his roles as Han Solo in the Star Wars series and the famous archaeologist in the Indiana Jones series. Scientists are now naming (another) animal after Ford, and the actor has a strange reaction to it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ford said that scientists “keep naming creatures” after him, but for some reason, “it’s always them that scare the kids.” Ford based his comment on his observation of his namesake. Though the new creature’s name comes from something children fear, Ford noted that it has a much gentler effect: Ford said he spends his “free time cross-stitching” and is also a plant-loving dad who “sings lullabies to his basil plants to keep them from being scared at night.”

Why Do Animals Keep Being Named After Harrison Ford?

The new “creature” named after Ford is a snake that now goes by the odd scientific name Tachymenoides harrisonfordii. The research team that discovered the snake said they chose the name Ford in honor of his snake conservation efforts through Conservation International. In addition to Tachymenoides harrisonfordii, Ford’s name also inspired the nomenclature of a new species of ant called Feidor harrisonfordii and a spider called Calponia harrisonfordii. While snake researchers had a clear explanation for the choice, they were right to suspect that Ford would choose an animal named after himself. The new snake, Tachymenoides harrisonfordii, seems like an especially ironic name considering that Ford’s most famous character, Indiana Jones, is afraid of snakes. This isn’t the first animal to be named after Ford, so it’s unclear whether the scientists are just some Indiana Jones fans trying to play a prank, but the discovery is interesting nonetheless.

Ford now has not one but three animals named after him. It was interesting to see how the 81-year-old responded to the news with his trademark dry humor, including an eerie one-liner about singing a sweet botanical melody. While many actors are proud to have won Oscars and other awards, Ford is one of the few actors who can now boast having three animals named after him.
