Flash Actor Reminisces on Challenging Pirates of the Caribbean Audition

Flash mogul Kiersey Clemons laughs as she recalls her disastrous audition for Pirates of the Caribbean, but was optimistic she’d make it. The Flash star Kiersey Clemons recounts the time her audition for Pirates of the Caribbean took an unexpectedly disastrous turn. Given Clemons’ success in Hollywood, including the DC Universe (DCU), it may come as a surprise to some that she failed her audition for Pirates of the Caribbean. The actress was first set to appear in 2017’s Justice League as Flash’s love interest Iris West. Unfortunately, their scene was cut from the final cut and remained unreleased until it was included in Zack Snyder’s director’s cut, which premiered in 2021. Though she’s now reprising her role in The Flash, she once had her eye on another major film franchise.

On The Jennifer Hudson Show, Clemons spoke about her disastrous audition for Pirates of the Caribbean. The actress didn’t reveal which movie she was auditioning for or what role she was gunning for. But anyone who follows her career knows she made a name for herself as a leading lady in blockbuster films. So when she joked that “things didn’t go well because I was doing a really good job,” maybe she was on the right track. Check out her statement below.

The film Clemons auditioned for was likely Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. After all, Clemons only entered the film industry in 2010, long after the first three films in the series had premiered. Since she was relatively new to the industry and still in her teens, it seemed unlikely that she would be auditioning for the fourth film in 2011. However, by 2017, she had made great strides in the film business and was already attracting interest from film franchises.

Clemons began in the industry as a young actress, starring in the Disney Channel original series Shake It Up and Austin & Ally from 2010 to 2013. By 2014, she made the transition from Disney series acting to adult roles with surprising ease. She landed her first exciting role in the Golden Globe Award-winning series Transparent. By 2015, she landed her first leading role in Eye Candy, winning the hearts of audiences with her portrayal of the edgy, sweet and mysterious character Sophia.

However, Clemons’ real breakthrough came with her role in 2015’s Dope. The indie coming-of-age film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, after which it was approached by multiple production companies and released theatrically, where it was highly praised by the film community and critics. In particular, Clemons captivated audiences with her portrayal of Diggy, an unashamedly confident lesbian teenager who is 100% comfortable in herself. Since then, Clemons has continued to land roles in projects such as An L.A. Minute, Lady and the Tramp, and Someone I Once Knew. Pirates of the Caribbean didn’t work out for Clemons, but it was also unsuccessful and garnered interest from blockbuster productions, so she ultimately didn’t want the role.
