Fast X Director Explains Creating The Standout Villain

Fast X director Louis Leterrier explains how he came to create standout villain Dante Reyes, played by Jason Momoa. Dante de Momoa is the son of evil drug lord Hernan Reyes (Joaquin de Almeida), who was killed in Fast Five. Fast X focuses on how Dante goes after Dom’s family for revenge, and does so in entertainingly violent ways. Dante’s quest for revenge leads to Fast X’s dramatic ending, which puts the lives of several characters on hold. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Leterrier spoke about how much Momoa influenced Dante’s characterization in Fast X. Leterrier said that creating Dante was a collaborative effort between him and Momoa, and that the actor himself played a key role in creating the character. Read Leterrier’s comments below:

It’s kind of taking it to an extreme when you realize that we have the same sense of humor and sensibility to our movies and our characters, and that the biggest villains are also the most anthropomorphized and interesting. [Threat] comes from humor, and humor comes from danger. Just that shift made us realize we had something in common. Then we started working, we started rehearsing, and we started coming up with new dialogue and new scenes, honestly, entire scenes for his character. But it’s Jason, nobody could do that but Jason. Whoever Dante is, he’s a weird version of Jason Momoa. Jason Momoa is violent and angry and spoiled. Jason drives a 1938 Bentley, he builds these bikes, he has silk scarves and stuff. Push that a little bit and you have Dante.

Why Dante Is A Formidable Fast & Furious Villain

Fast X

Dante is a dangerous villain in Fast X with a nearly unlimited supply of blood, which he uses to exact revenge on Dom and his family. At the end of Fast X, Dante’s actions force Jacob Toretto (John Cena) to sacrifice himself to save Dom. Roman, Tej, Ramsey and Han are then shot and killed by the traitor Emmeth, leaving their fates up to Fast 11. Given the destruction Dante caused in Fast X, it seems he will stop at nothing to destroy Dom’s family. This makes him a formidable opponent that won’t be going away anytime soon. Notably, Fast X’s post-credits scene reveals that the next step in Dante’s plan is to target Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), meaning that Fast X will be an interesting villain at the end of the Fast and Furious series, given the dangers Dante faces and his sense of humor. However, with a Fast 12 on the way, Momoa may be playing Dante for a long time to come. No doubt Momoa will keep the same energy for Dante in the Fast X sequel that he gave to Dante in the tenth Fast and Furious film.
