Doctor Who Celebrates New Streaming Collection With Epic Eras-Spanning Intro

The BBC iPlayer enhanced edition of Doctor Who comes with a new opening sequence covering every era of the long-running sci-fi series. Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary this November with a three-part special that sees the return of David Tennant as a new incarnation of the titular Time Lord. With numerous spin-offs, tie-in shows and documentaries in the works, a ton of Doctor Who media is expected to be released in November, with Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor set to debut in a December season special. Ahead of a major update for Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer, the official Instagram has given viewers a glimpse of what to expect from the new streaming home for the entire series, unveiling a teaser that will play before each broadcast. The sequence features a new song by returning composer Murray Gold, and the scene features every Doctor from William Hartnell to Gatwa, several recognizable companions, and a selection of the Doctor’s greatest foes included in the text of the new Whoniverse logo. The animation ends with the TARDIS flying away.

Doctor Who’s Universe Is About To Expand

With many of the Doctor Who series now available to watch on BBC iPlayer in time for the 60th anniversary, the launch of the Who Universe suggests that showrunner Russell T. Davies wants to ensure everything is available to watch in one place. With footage from classic and modern eras, as well as spin-offs from Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K9 and Company and Class, it’s clearer than ever that there’s more to this world than the main films. For the first time in years, newcomers can explore a wider range of the franchise. But the future of Doctor Who isn’t limited to the main series or existing spin-offs, with Davies promising that there’s more to come.

The November 1 iPlayer update will also launch a new spin-off series called Tales of the TARDIS, in which the Doctor reunites with old companions and reminisces about past adventures. With a new series on the horizon and Davies promising more sequels to come, Doctor Who is once again on its way to becoming a major multimedia series. The start of the Whoniverse perfectly illustrates Davies’ ambitions for the future of the series. The series is currently enjoying a similar launch to Disney+’s own MCU and Star Wars treatments, and it’s clear that Davies and the BBC see the series as a potential title that can compete with Disney’s two hit films. Doctor Who Season 14 will see a whole new era with a Gatto Doctor at the helm, but the Whoniverse will always cherish everything that came before.
