Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Featured, Reviews Film Threat

James Wan’s Aquaman and the Last Kingdom is the stupidest superhero movie I’ve ever seen. This list includes Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, the entire Fantastic Four, and Howard the Duck. Despite their obvious failures, these films had at least some redeeming value: unintentional camp, unfulfilled ambition, can-do attitude, and great performances. The latest Aquaman has no redeeming value. Judging by the audience reaction upon exiting theaters, it will be difficult to recoup the inflated $205 million price tag. Who would want to undergo two hours of water torture? David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick’s script – if you can call it that – is wrong in every way. What is supposed to be playful banter between the main characters feels leaden, forced, and contrived, as if the author can’t convince with a decent joke or pun here and there. It’s almost impossible to explain with the completely ridiculous and messy plot, but I’ll give you a quick overview.

But the same can be said for the story as a whole. “Slapdash” would be a compliment to describe the editing, pacing, and headache-inducing assault on the senses that this sleazy excuse for entertainment represents. You might think that scenes where characters ride translucent seahorses through waves, Aquaman battles giant insects, or armies clash would at least evoke a sense of awe or wonder. But that’s not the case. This is wrong. It’s like being stuck in a spinning submarine in rough seas, and the seasickness just keeps going and it seems like it goes on and on. Momoa gets 100 points. It’s like he has nothing to lose. Arrogant, self-confident and with little humor, he shows some underrated star power. I really liked the first part, but it gets boring quickly because it’s monotonous. Kidman achieved great success with perhaps one of the most embarrassing performances of her career. Did someone teach her the lines on set? Because she has no idea what’s going on.

Add to that the huge underappreciated issue of global warming, and Aquaman and the Last Kingdom isn’t just the worst superhero movie of all time. Take that into account. Worst movie ever. But at the time, I thought “Wonka” was a terrible movie, on the level of “Cats.” No, the critics seem to like it, and the audiences seem to like it, too. Maybe when I get older, I’ll just become an annoying old man. Or maybe I’m just looking forward to absorbing all that the filmmakers and audience have to offer. Watch The Holdover this holiday season and don’t waste your hard-earned money on this crap.
