Every Spell Cast Only Once In Harry Potter

There are hundreds of spells in the Harry Potter books and films, but some only appear once. There could be various reasons for this; some are too complicated or dangerous to use regularly, while others are very useful only in very specific cases. However, sometimes it seems logical that spells are used regularly in the wizarding world, yet only appear once in the Harry Potter books and films. In total, there are about 80 spells listed in the Harry Potter books, and several more appear in the films. This included a variety of incantations, curses, spells, and transformation spells. Of course, the more valuable spells like Accio, Stupify, Alohamora, and Wingardium Leviosa are used frequently throughout the series and will be very familiar to Harry Potter fans. Others, like Bella Welt, which turns animals into chalices, served little purpose and were only used in classrooms, but even then, were used repeatedly until the class got it right. Still, there were plenty of spells in Harry Potter that were only ever used once, regardless of their usefulness.

Anapneo

Anapneo was used by Horace Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when Marcus Belby, a boy who was a one-time member of the Slug Club, choked on his dinner. The spell quickly cleared Belby’s airway and saved his life. Of course, Harry Potter characters don’t often choke on food, so the spell never comes up again. Still, it’s certainly a useful spell for any wizarding parent or guardian to know.

Alarte Ascendare

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Gilderoy Lockhart used Alarte Ascendea to try and defeat a snake that Draco Malfoy had summoned in his dueling club. The etymology of this spell is to launch an object into the air, so it’s unclear why the trickster-turned-teacher thought this spell would be so useful. That’s exactly what happened to the snake, and when it landed noticeably harder than before, Professor Snape had to deal with it.

Aparecium

The spell Rebellio, which is said to reveal hidden secrets, was used many times in the Harry Potter books and films, but there is a similar spell that only appeared once. Hermione Granger used Aparecium on Tom Riddle’s diary in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to verify whether the previous owner of the mystery had written to the Invisible Company. It is not clear how this spell differs from other revelations, but it may be intended for writing rather than a broader mystery.

Brackium Emendo

Brachium Amend was another spell used by Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, with spectacular failure. If used correctly, the spell could heal broken bones. However, when Lockhart used it on Harry’s broken wrist, the boy was left with no bone in his arm. Unfortunately, this meant long nights in the Hospital Wing, painfully waiting for the bone to grow back.

Deletrius

Deretorius never appears in the Harry Potter films, but was used by Barty Crouch Sr. in the books. After Harry was found under the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup, Ministry officials used Priori Incantato on Harry’s wand to confirm the last spell Harry used and the Dark Mark. A small shadow appeared on Harry’s wand. Barty Crouch then quickly used Deretorius to make the small symbol disappear from the air.

Deprimo

The Deprimo spell is used to make a hole in the ground, so this is obviously not something most magicians use on a daily basis. In the Harry Potter books, it only appears in the second story of Xenophilius Lovegood when Hermione casts it to create a hole. She does this so that she, Harry, and Ron, who were hiding, will fall to the ground and be found by the Death Eaters (so that they can see that Xenophilius is not lying).
