Fast X Movie Review

Three entries removed from the series’ 5/6/7 peak early on, but notable is that Paul Walker is far more likeable, and the Fast and Furious franchise has spread and expanded and expanded like a pandemic, clinging on to talents like Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, John Cena, and Jason Statham while refusing to let them go. Add in an obnoxious main cast (I’m looking at you, Ludacris, and you, Tyrese Gibson, and damn, poor Michelle Rodriguez, who at least seems to recognize how lame the Fast movies have become and is making a proper effort), and there are really a ton of comics still floating around because this damn series won’t let them go.

Fast X is an improvement over its predecessor, which I actually refused to see in theaters because it was so bad. Though still silly, with gravity-defying cars and Vin Diesel ignoring everything else, director Louis Leterrier’s Fast X isn’t as silly as its predecessor. The film has a lot of pretty intense action scenes, including a climactic destruction scene and a scene where the team leads a giant bomb through the streets of Rome. Sure, they’re all a bit silly and over the top, but in the setting of this over the top silly series, the ridiculousness is much more acceptable, like flying cars through space and Charlize Theron with tousled hair. And Jason Momoa. He seems to be the only person in the film who understands how wacky and ridiculous this series is. He bows out enthusiastically. His character is ridiculous and poorly written, but instead of going through the motions like most of the recurring actors, he flexes every flaming muscle in that heavy, muscular body. He’s a rebel, and Fast X is worth watching for that alone. Almost X is not a good movie. It’s not even a good one, but Momoa’s nice gesture, combined with a great performance and low expectations, has catapulted NOS into the franchise and given it momentum as it nears that anticipated checkered flag.
