Venom 2 Director Says The Sequel Is A Love Story

Director Andy Serkis has revealed that Let There Be Carnage is a love story at its core. The sequel picks up from the events of the 2018 hit film Venom, telling the story of Eddie Brock as he struggles with the new challenge of hosting Venom, an alien symbiote that has taken over his body. The sequel will see most of the original cast return, including Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams, and welcome back Woody Harrelson, who is promised to cause “bloodbaths” as serial killer Cletus Kasady. Naomie Harris will also return as Shriek, Cletus’ love interest in the comics.

The announcement that Serkis will be directing the sequel comes as good news to many. With a prolific acting career spanning The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, Marvel and the Star Wars universe, Serkis is an expert at creating epic film productions. Serkis is so familiar with the field that his involvement as director of Venom 2 has even raised many questions about whether Tom Hardy’s Venom character could have been created using motion capture back then. However, Serkis recently confirmed that Venom will be largely computer-generated so as not to affect Hardy’s performance. Still, the big question remains: how will Serkis approach the storytelling aspects of the sequel, and how will it differ from Ruben Fleischer’s first film?

Now, in production notes for Venom 2 (via ComicBook), Serkis revealed that he actually thinks of the film as a love story. But instead of traditional romantic love, Venom 2 is about “the extraordinary relationship between the symbiote and its host.” The director said that while Eddie and Venom’s relationship is “totally problematic and stressful,” the couple “can’t live without each other.” Check out Serkis’ full quote below:

“The film is a love story, but it’s not the kind of love story you’d expect… So much of it is about the extraordinary relationship between the symbiote and its host. Every love story has its pitfalls and ups and downs.Venom and Eddie’s relationship is completely problematic. and tension, and they almost hate each other. But they have to be together – they can’t live without each other.

The relationship between Eddie and Venom gradually developed throughout the events of the first film, and in the film’s final moments, the two finally agreed to coexist in some harmony. Avi Arad, producer of the film, also commented in his production notes that “they learned to live with each other,” noting that “their interdependence compels them to stay together.” Teasers for the sequel have given small glimpses into how Eddie and Venom’s relationship has blossomed since the first movie, but their partnership is likely to be put to the test when they come face to face with Venom’s nemesis, Carnage.

Venom 2 looks to be even more intense and action-packed than its predecessor. But despite the trailer, the sequel still meets the PG-13 rating that was a major draw for the first film. It will be interesting to see how Serkis crafts the action sequences to fit both the MPAA rating and what comic fans want to see on screen. After multiple delays due to COVID-19, there are rumors that Sony is looking to push back the sequel’s planned October release date again. But fans needn’t, as these rumors were recently dispelled following the announcement that Venom: Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters on October 1, two weeks earlier than planned. I’m excited to see how the anti-hero version of Serkis will cross over.
