The Holdovers Movie Review “Sublime” is the perfect word for director Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.” The film stars Paul Giammatti as a crappy teacher who discovers he has a heart, too, thanks to an unexpected friendship with a student who also has a heart. asshole. Dominic Sessa plays Angus Tully, a smart but troubled teenager who is under the strict tutelage of teacher Paul Hunnam during the winter holidays. Although they hate each other, their angry attitudes gradually begin to damage each other’s vulnerable appearance. The Holdovers is a movie that never interested me, but don’t underestimate Mr. Payne (Election, Sideways, Descendants). This is the smaller movie with the least plot inertia and stakes. Still, every moment of this damn movie is just. amazing. Beautifully photographed with a soothing, old-fashioned aesthetic that feels like sitting in a chair and practically massaging your delicate muscles, Payne creates a wonderful atmosphere that feels alive and makes you feel like you are yourself.

Based on David Heminson’s screenplay, the actors use their incredible chemistry to elevate the quality of their work little by little. Giamatti is saying something at his best and Sessa is really good. DaâVine Joy Randolph is also sensational in a supporting role. If I’ve ever seen one, it’s an award-worthy performance. It’s hard for me to write a review this good, so I’ll keep it short. The Holdovers is definitely one of his best movies of the year. Funny, entertaining, powerful, and unforgettable, it’s a perfect piece of filmmaking and performance art. Oh, and sublime.
