season 1, episode 3, “Questa Lane”

This comes as Usher and Whitney Siegel (Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone) plan to artificially pump up the La Española real estate market through their yet-to-launch series, The Reno Show, Passive Home. This requires mental acrobatics. From HGTV We believe in giving back to the community. But the moral dilemmas surrounding their callous actions (like buying up properties at auction in hopes of reselling them within a year) don’t bother them as much as the little things (like the fact that test audiences didn’t approve, which they really like as potential presenters). From this disparity, Showtime’s The Curse derives much of its dark comedy and biting social commentary. Usher and Whitney are quintessential white saviors, but by definition, they fail to see themselves as saviors. This is why they are such fallible protagonists.

When we meet her this week, Asher is in the middle of finalizing another real estate deal for his growing portfolio. Sure, he ends up spending over $20,000 more than he expected, but their foolproof plan is, well, foolproof, right? We’ll see… at least he’ll discover a surprising aspect of this new property: getting back in touch with Nallah (Hikma Warsameh), the young black girl who cursed him out at the beginning of the series. Nallah, her sister, and her father (Abusir, played by Barkhad Abdi) all live there, despite not paying rent in quite some time. And they had no idea that their homes were sold after the owners stopped paying taxes.

Usher discovers all this in typical Usher fashion: he drills into the door, scares the two girls, chases them, then chases them down the street where he tries to give them more hundred-dollar bills. This naturally arouses the suspicions of the neighbors, who force him to stay still while they call the police. Confronted by police officers who try to chase Abusir and his daughters away, Usher takes it upon himself to do what any guilt-ridden person would do: he offers them free housing and possibly even renovations to improve their home (no surprise, Abusir wants it in writing!). Might this be another way to break the curse? Usher seems increasingly convinced of this. Especially when Nala reveals that she cursed Usher to lose his chicken dinner, despite him admitting that he was just following a TikTok trend – a very specific curse, but also one that we know we’ve already experienced. Could this be why Usher and Whitney’s lives are slowly falling apart?

They’ve already had an ectopic pregnancy (leading to a very uncomfortable doctor’s visit where Asher once again proves he has no social skills) and are now mutual investors… one (Barrier Coffee) has taken over La’s business where Española was employed. At least not when the cameras are rolling. This is not good PR for the couple, since a big part of their mission is to give back to people like Fernando, who now has a full-time job and had promised a cafe that closed. Whitney tries to save face by covering her tracks. (This includes offering Fernando a security job and apologizing profusely.) It’s at this point that the sentence that shapes this entire episode becomes clear. “I thought it was just a facade,” Fernando tells Whitney. There’s a note of resignation in her voice, but she sees the whole situation objectively. Why should their good deed be anything more than self-serving publicity? Of course she was. But Whitney couldn’t live with that.
